Rats

Estimated US Population: Unknown. Chicago is the nation’s “rattiest” city. Then Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., New York and San Francisco respectively.

Short Description: Four-legged mammals and mouse-like wild animals. They thrive in a variety of climates and conditions and are often found in and around homes and other buildings, on farms, and in gardens. Rats will eat just about anything and contaminate food. Rats memorize locations of pathways, obstacles, food and water, shelter, and features of their environment.

Problems Caused:

• Can carry rabies. Can transmit parasites and diseases to other animals and humans too.
• Damage structures and property. They gnaw on all types of materials, including copper, lead, plastic and wood
• Contaminate food and food-preparation surfaces with their feces, which can contain the bacterium that causes food poisoning (salmonellosis)
• Will eat fruit that is still on the tree
